We have three mutual funds: the Green Century Balanced Fund, the Green Century Equity Fund, and the Green Century MSCI International Index Fund.
There are four main differences between the Funds:
- Types of holdings. The Equity Fund and the International Index Fund invest in stocks. The Balanced Fund invests in stocks AND bonds.
- Geographic scope. The Equity Fund invests only in U.S. companies and the Balanced Fund predominantly invests in U.S. companies. The International Index Fund invests in companies outside of the U.S.
- Style of investment. The International Index Fund and the Equity Fund are passively managed funds, also known as index funds. They both invest in the stocks of companies included in indexes produced by MSCI that are customized for Green Century. ° The Balanced Fund is an actively managed fund; Trillium Asset Management is its subadvisor, or day-to-day portfolio manager, with the supervision of Green Century.
- Currently, all of the Funds have Individual Investor Share Classes with slightly different expense ratios (1.20% for the Equity Fund, 1.28% for the International Index Fund and 1.47% for the Balanced Fund). And the International Index Fund, the Equity Fund, and the Balanced Fund also have Institutional Share Classes with an expense ratio of 0.98%, 0.90%, and 1.17%, respectively. There is a $250,000/Fund investment minimum for the Institutional Share Classes.Please see the Green Century Funds page to learn more.
- The inception date for the Balanced Fund is 3/18/1992.
- The Equity Fund is invested in an index that commenced on 6/3/1991.
- The International Fund is our newest fund, and it began operations on 9/30/2016.
- GCINX for the Individual Share Class of the International Index Fund.
- GCIFX for the Institutional Share Class of the International Index Fund.
- GCEQX for the Individual Share Class of the Equity Fund.
- GCEUX for the Institutional Share Class of the Equity Fund.
- GCBLX for the Individual Share Class of the Balanced Fund.
- GCBUX for the Institutional Share Class of the Balanced Fund.
- Many news and financial websites report daily share prices using the Funds’ ticker symbols.
You can open a regular investment account with any of the Green Century Funds with a $2,500 per Fund minimum initial investment.
Individual Retirement Accounts (IRAs), Uniform Gift/Transfer to Minors Accounts (UGMA/UTMA), and Education Savings Accounts may be opened with a $1,000 per Fund minimum initial investment.
A minimum initial investment of only $1,000 per Fund is required for investors who wish to open a regular investment account with an Automatic Investment Plan of $100 or more per month.
There is a $250,000 per Fund minimum initial investment for the Institutional Share Class of the International Index Fund, the Institutional Share Class of the Equity Fund, and the Institutional Share Class of the Balanced Fund.
Yes. You can open an IRA in each of our three Fund’s Individual Investor Share Class by making a $1,000/Fund initial investment, by transferring an existing IRA account from another institution, or by consolidating several existing IRA accounts into one Green Century IRA account. The Funds offer Traditional, Roth, and SEP IRAs. The minimum initial investment for an IRA in the International Index Fund Institutional Share Class, the Equity Fund Institutional Share Class, and the Balanced Fund Institutional Share Class is $250,000/Fund.
The easiest way to transfer an IRA/retirement account is to use our IRA Transfer Request Form (PDF). Complete this form and mail it to us along with your IRA Account Registration Form (PDF). We will contact your current IRA custodian to have the funds transferred from your current IRA custodian to a Green Century IRA account. You should check with your current IRA custodian to determine if it requires a Medallion Signature Guarantee on the IRA Transfer Request Form.
Yes. Education Savings Accounts and Uniform Gift/Transfer to Minors Accounts (UGMA/UTMA) may be opened with a $1,000/Fund minimum initial investment. UGMA/UTMA accounts can be opened online. You can find forms and documents to open an Education Savings Account here.
All of the Green Century Funds are no-load, meaning there is no fee to buy or sell shares. Each Fund and share class has its own expense ratio (Balanced Fund Individual: 1.47%, Balanced Fund Institutional: 1.17%, Equity Fund Individual: 1.2%, Equity Fund Institutional: 0.9%, International Fund Individual: 1.28%, International Fund Institutional: 0.98%). For IRA/ESA accounts, there is a $15 annual custodial fee.
There are no sales charges, either as front- or back-end loads, associated with any share class. However, if you redeem your shares within 60 days of purchase or acquisition through exchange, you will be charged a redemption fee equal to 2.00% of the net asset value of the shares redeemed.

Income dividends, if any, are paid twice a year, typically in June and December. Capital gains, if any, are paid once a year, typically in December.
You may choose to have dividends and capital gains reinvested in your account or paid to you by check. Dividends and capital gains for retirement accounts must be reinvested rather than paid by check.
