Novozymes*, based in Denmark, is the world's largest producer of enzymes used in industrial processes. Enzymes are proteins that help create the natural chemical reactions upon which life depends. Novozymes harnesses enzymes to replace harmful chemical reactions in industrial processes and to perform tasks in a much more efficient and targeted way than traditional chemicals. For example, in the paper industry, enzymes can be used in the bleaching process to reduce the amount of chlorine needed. Since they generally work at much lower temperatures than standard industrial chemicals, enzymes are significant energy savers when used in laundry detergents to allow better cleaning in cold water. Novozymes has been included for three years running (2002-2004) on a list of the world's top 20 sustainability-leading stocks prepared by SustainableBusiness.com.
