Long, sunny days with mornings picking blueberries (and afternoons turning them into pies), picnics in the park with watermelon for dessert, ice cream trucks — those are some the best days of summer.
And it’s all thanks to the bees. Bees are responsible for nearly 1 out of every 3 bites of food we eat – including many blueberries, watermelons, and the alfalfa that feeds dairy cows.
Unfortunately, bees are in trouble. Bee populations have been experiencing historic declines, with potentially devastating impacts for our food crops. Scientists point to variety of reasons, one of which is a class of pesticides known as neonicotinoids, which are 6,000 times as toxic as DDT.
Our non-profit partners at Environment America, who are part of the Public Int
erest Network that founded Green Century, are working to protect the bees. They have been pressuring the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to ban these dangerous pesticides.
For 25 years, making an impact has been core to our mission at Green Century. You can learn more about our current impact investing work on our website.
And if you’re already a Green Century investor, thank you – from us and the bees.
