Green Century uses its clout as a shareholder to advocate for stronger environmental stewardship policies and practices within the companies held in each Fund.
Each year, Green Century files shareholder resolutions, holds dialogues with companies and works to improve their environmental performance and reduce the risk to shareholders.
Since our founding, Green Century has engaged over 100 companies through shareholder advocacy. Green Century has challenged companies to improve their environmental performance, such as reducing the use of energy, toxic chemicals and water. We also advocate that companies preserve wilderness and support sustainable food and agriculture. Green Century also has called for more corporate transparency and accountability, especially in the wake of the Citizens United ruling.

Protecting Water Sources
Clean watersheds are not only critical for ecosystems and wildlife — they are also vital for people’s health and quality of life. Unfortunately, many corporations use freshwater sources, and many times also contaminate these regional water sources with toxic chemicals used in and released by their operations. Green Century is challenging companies that use hydraulic fracturing to minimize their water use, disclose and reduce their toxic chemical use and identify and stop the emission of methane into our atmosphere. Curbing Climate Change
Burning fossil fuels releases billions of tons of climate change-causing carbon dioxide every year. Climate change poses increasingly alarming threats to the earth, our communities and to the long-term financial success of many businesses. Green Century is urging companies to reduce their greenhouse gas emissions by increasing energy efficiency and sourcing energy from renewable sources. Learn more about our work on Climate Change

Preserving Wilderness and Biodiversity
Too many of our parks, forests and crucial natural habitats are threatened by industrial activities and overdevelopment. Green Century is working to preserve wilderness, habitats, and open spaces by reducing the environmental impacts of drilling, mining, hydraulic fracturing and deforestation in and near these special places. Eliminating Toxic Chemicals
Only 200 of the 80,000 chemicals found in every day household products have been tested for their effects on human health. Many of these chemicals are increasingly being linked to health threats such as cancer and infertility. To reduce the presence of these chemicals in the marketplace, Green Century is calling on companies to phase out toxic chemicals and make products using safer alternatives. Supporting Sustainable Food and Agriculture
The industrial food system has significant negative impacts on our land, environment and ability to produce and distribute healthy food. Even though the long-term effects of genetically modified organisms (GMOs) on our ecosystem and our health are still not known, many agribusiness corporations have increased their use of GMOs in crops we eat. Green Century is working to promote more sustainable practices throughout the food chain by calling on manufacturers to disclose the risks and presence of GMOs. Promoting Corporate Accountability
In the wake of Citizens United, political spending has reached unprecedented levels. Yet, corporations have failed to prove the value of such spending to their shareholders. At the same time, companies are spending billions of dollars in lobbying expenditures to influence state and national legislation and policy. Green Century calls on companies to be more accountable to shareholders by refraining from influencing elections and by disclosing their lobbying expenditures.
