Green Century Shareholder Advocate, Kate Kroll, recently returned from a meeting in Amsterdam where she met with our global partners to discuss strategy for educating and organizing investors around deforestation.

In July, we launched the RISC (Risk in Supply Chains) project. The five-year campaign will inform and engage global investors about the growing business and environmental risks for companies associated with deforestation and build on our ongoing efforts to curb global warming. We’ve already experienced a number of successes through the campaign, specifically regarding palm oil, which you can learn more about by visiting our Forest Protection Campaign webpage.

With the launch of Green Century’s International Index Fund, which is the first responsible and diversified fossil fuel free international index fund, we are expanding the geographic scope of our advocacy efforts. The meeting in Amsterdam allowed us to learn how to best work with our partners to build on our efforts to curb deforestation due to palm oil in Indonesia and Malaysia.

Our advocacy is expanding in geographic scope and your investments can, too. Invest internationally with the Green Century International Index Fund.

While forests are burned for plantations in Southeast Asia, cattle ranching and unsustainable practices of soybean cultivation and production are mainly responsible for deforestation in Latin America, with deforestation caused by demand for soft commodities in Africa also becoming a growing concern. Although some suppliers and consumer-facing companies have made zero deforestation commitments that cover these commodities, more companies are needed to follow suit. In addition, companies have also been slow to implement practices that ensure zero deforestation and the necessary tools and monitoring systems for other stakeholders to hold companies accountable have been lacking.

Moving forward, in collaboration with our RISC partners, we will work with both suppliers and consumer-facing companies to secure and uphold zero deforestation commitments in South America and Africa. As you can imagine, there is plenty to come of this initiative and we look forward to keeping you up-to-date on this incredible work.
