Getting food from farms to our tables is incredibly resource intensive, using 80 percent of the freshwater consumed in the United States, half of all land, and one-tenth of our annual energy budget.

Grocery ShoppingAnd yet, we still throw away 40 percent of our food – enough to fill the Empire State Building 91 times. Much of this food waste winds up in landfills, where decomposition leads to methane emissions, a greenhouse gas more than 80 times as potent as carbon dioxide.

The good news is that there are lots of solutions, like proper labeling, purchasing imperfect produce and retailers using food diversion programs.

As responsible investors, the significant environmental and social impacts related to food waste are of strong concern. That’s why Green Century has started to push companies to set food waste reduction target goals, following EPA guidelines.

We joined Trillium Asset Management and First Affirmative Financial Network in filing the very first proposal related to food waste with Whole Foods Market* earlier this year, and plan to continue to leverage investor power to encourage stronger sustainability policies and practices.

If you are already a Green Century investor, thank you for being a part of this effort.
