As many of you know, Green Century just launched its new fossil fuel free International Index Fund. We always anticipated being a fuller family of mutual funds, with the goal of providing our investors with more ways to make an impact through the power of their investments.

The wider geographic scope of Green Century’s International Index Fund investment strategy parallels the expanded reach of our shareholder advocacy program, particularly around our Forest Protection Campaign.

Last month, our shareholder advocate, Kate Kroll, traveled to Indonesia to better understand the challenges and successes of sourcing one agricultural commodity, palm oil. The method in which palm oil, the most widely used vegetable oil in the world, has been grown has been responsible for the ongoing burning of rainforests in Southeast Asia. This destructive growing practice releases climate change-causing gases, destroys the habitats of endangered species such as the Sumatran tiger, and displaces indigenous communities.

But, there is a better way. Through the Forest Protection Campaign, our advocacy has started to transform the international supply chain of palm oil by getting companies to adopt zero-deforestation agreements. In fact, the Wilmar* zero-deforestation policy will avoid 1.5 gigatons of carbon pollution alone, which is equal to taking 294,118 cars off the road for one year.

Using our leverage as shareholders of international companies is just one of the new avenues we anticipate using to broaden the reach of our advocacy. And particularly regarding the Forest Protection Campaign, we look forward to addressing other at-risk forest commodities such as soy, cattle, pulp, paper, and rubber in South America and Africa.

We hope that you will join us on this mission to create lasting systemic change and impact on the international stage.
