This week, Green Century’s President Leslie Samuelrich and Forest Campaign Director Kate Kroll are heading to the annual conference for signatories to the United Nations-supported Principles for Responsible Investment (UNPRI) in Berlin, Germany. As one of the premiere conferences around the growing field of impact investing, we are looking forward to collaborating with our fellow signatories and sharing our experiences in promoting sustainable solutions to reduce carbon emissions by protecting forests.

The conference allows those of us within the investment community who focus on environmental, social, and governance issues to discuss pertinent topics, and share experiences with peers from across the globe.

Green Century has been a signatory to the PRI since 2014 and is an active member. We are on the working group on palm oil, and are a charter member of and on the advisory committee for the PRI-Ceres Deforestation Task Force.

Through the PRI, we are supporting efforts to push for sustainable sourcing of agricultural commodities throughout the supply chain. Deforestation from tropical commodities like palm oil, cattle and soy poses material risks to communities, companies and shareholders.

At last year’s conference in Singapore, we presented the progress that has been made in transforming the supply chain to protect forests. Since then, we have expanded our forest protection work by partnering with Chain Reaction Research, a consortium of expert NGOs, to other tropical commodities, like cattle and soy.

In Germany, we will be joining our partners to discuss these risks and opportunities that deforestation poses to investors, and how shareholders might address them through joining with us to press companies to make needed changes.

If you will be at PRI in Person this week, please join us on Wednesday, September 27th, at 1:30 pm at the InterContinental Hotel in Berlin.
